On Balance Volume Explained for NSE and MCX Trading

What On Balance Volume is

On Balance Volume sits in the Volume group of the SignBot indicator library. Cumulative volume flow — divergence signals reversals. It is one of the 187 indicators the Strategy Builder can use as a condition, and it can be combined with any other indicator, candlestick pattern or price level using AND / OR logic.

Settings SignBot exposes

On Balance Volume takes no configurable period — it is derived directly from the candle series, so there is nothing to tune. That makes it a stable reference point to compare other, tunable indicators against.

Comparisons available on this indicator

SignBot only offers comparisons that make sense for On Balance Volume, so you cannot build a condition the engine could not evaluate:

  • is bullish (> 0)
  • is bearish (< 0)
  • is above
  • is below

When SignBot evaluates it

Indicator and pattern conditions are evaluated on candle close, never mid-bar. A provisional value inside a forming candle can cross a threshold and then un-cross before the bar completes, which would fire a signal on something that never actually happened. Waiting for the close is a deliberate design decision in the engine, not a limitation.

Building a rule with On Balance Volume

  1. Open the Strategy Builder and search for your scrip — the segment is detected automatically
  2. Add an entry condition and choose On Balance Volume from the Volume category
  3. Set the comparison and the value, or compare it against a second indicator
  4. Add more conditions with AND / OR if you want confirmation before entry
  5. Set your exit rules — target, stop loss and time exit are all separate settings
  6. Review the capital and margin step, then save

Segment rules you should know

SignBot routes every strategy by segment, and the rules genuinely differ:

  • NSE equity and F&O support 1min, 3min, 5min, 15min, 30min, 1hr, 4hr and 1day candles
  • MCX futures support 1min, 5min, 30min and 1day only — the vendor rejects the others, so they are not offered
  • On NSE options SignBot is buy-only. A bullish signal buys a CE, a bearish signal buys a PE, and there is no option writing anywhere in the platform
  • Options entry and exit conditions are evaluated on the underlying spot candle, while the position itself is the option contract
  • NSE history goes back up to 36 months for backtests; MCX history is limited to 3 months

A note on warm-up

Any period-based calculation needs history before its first valid value. SignBot seeds the candle window from vendor history when a strategy starts, so On Balance Volume is usable from the first live bar rather than after a long wait. If you choose a very long period on a short timeframe, check the backtest actually produced trades — a strategy that never had enough bars to compute a value takes no trades at all, which is the correct behaviour but easy to misread as a bug.

Try it in SignBot

On Balance Volume works on its own, but it is usually stronger as one leg of a multi-condition rule. Strategy creation and the AI Optimizer are free forever, so you can build and refine the rule before spending anything.

  • Open the Strategy Builder and add the condition described above
  • Run a backtest on real NSE or MCX history — Rs 10 per run
  • Move it to SignBot virtual trading to watch it on live prices — Rs 15 entry and Rs 15 exit from wallet credits, no real money at risk
  • Only when it has earned your confidence, run it on LiveBot through your own broker account — Rs 30 entry and Rs 30 exit

The Strategy Builder, the indicator library and the AI Optimizer are all free to use — you only pay per backtest run and per signal.
